- We connect the red cable (positive pole of the laboratory power supply) depending where on the motherboard the short circuit is present.
For example, if the short circuit is present on main power rail "B+", we connect the red cable to the "B+" power rail (for example on the current sensing resistor). For example, if the short circuit is present on 5V coil, we remove the coil from the board and connect the red cable to the shorted pad on the place of that coil.
- We always connect the black cable (negative pole of the laboratory power supply) to the ground of the motherboard (for example a screw hole).

It is again depending where on the motherboard the short circuit is present. If the short circuit is present for example on 3V coil, and we set the laboratory power supply to 5V, we may cause additional damage on the board this way, because the voltage during a short circuit test may exceed 3V.
For example If the short circuit is present on main 19V power rail (B+) and we set the laboratory power supply to 5V, we may also cause additional damage on the motherboard in case one of the upper transistor in the DC/DC converters is damaged.
The general rule is that we start with a safe voltage limit 1V and current limit about 0,5A and then gradually increase the current. If we reach the set voltage limit and nothing gets hot, we can increase the voltage limit to 3V and repeat the short circuit test. If still nothing gets hot, we increase the voltage limit to 5V and repeat the test again, but in no case the rated voltage of the power rail on which the test is performed should be exceeded.
